Edinburgh Taxis

Many people regularly use taxis on business trips, holidays or when out for an evening. In Edinburgh, taxis are highly regulated with both drivers and vehicles operating under stringent conditions.
Edinburgh has a modern taxi fleet second to none with many skilled drivers, all of whom have taken and passed a difficult test of their knowledge of Edinburgh's streets, housing areas, hotels and other places of interest, as well as the best routes to take to get you there quickly and as cheaply as possible. Newer drivers have also sat through a series of training modules about various subjects the authorities have deemed relevant to taxi driving!

Taxis can be hailed in the street or found sitting at many of the taxi stances situated in and around the city centre area and the suburbs. These stances are clearly marked. Both Waverley and Haymarket rail stations, the bus station, many shopping centres, night clubs and restaurants also have ranks nearby. Taxis can also be booked, either in advance or just when you are ready to go from your hotel, home or business by telephoning any of the Taxi Radio Companies

TAXI FARES

The meter currently starts at £1.60 (£2.70 at night) which covers the first 450 metres or 90 seconds. It then goes up in increments of 25 pence for each additional 210 metres or 45 seconds becoming slightly cheaper after 2130 metres. More than two passengers are charged at 20p each, a telephone booking fee of 80p is also added when pre-booked. Over the Christmas period and New Years period, approximately fare and a half is charged (Taximeters are programmed for this, so the correct fare will always be displayed on the taximeter). Fares which start, or end, outwith the licensed area may be subject to a surcharge, or be a fixed price. GRATUITIES are, of course, discretionary, but, if you are happy with the service provided, 10-15% is usual.
